Description
Looking south down River Road from the top of the new railway overpass. At left on the corner of River Road and Myrtle Street is Alf Ward Ltd grocers who vacated in May 1965 shortly after construction of the overpass began. The Ministry of Works bought the property and demolished it in 1969. On the opposite corner of Myrtle Street and River Road is the Masonic Lodge, now known as The Old Lodge. Across Te Aroha Street at left is St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The three houses that can be seen on the west side of River Road are no longer there. Opoia Private Hospital used to occupy the space where the vacant lot is. In this photograph a Morris cement truck owned by JJ Craig Ltd of Kent Street, Frankton can be seen. It says Waikato Premix Concrete on the front.
