Object Detail

Description
Claudelands Shopping Centre c. 1920s. This photo shows the intersection of Grey Street and Te Aroha Street looking south along Grey Street toward Hamilton East. The store on the northeast corner is Claudelands Store, at the time known as Gadd's. Herbert Gadd bought the store from Harry Hardley in the 1920s. Two hitching posts can be seen in front of the store close to the road. One of these posts can still be found on this corner. Next to Gadd's on Grey Street is Waikato Meat Mart, a butcher shop. The building on the southwest corner accomodates a barber shop and a chocolate shop. Three delivery trucks - one is for Zero ice cream - a car and a bicycle are visible in the photo. The delivery truck on Te Aroha Street may be filling up with petrol from the Texaco Motor Spirit pump on the corner
