Description
This image shows the river side of Victoria Street, from about opposite Collingwood Street, heading south. Businesses and other establishments that can be identified, from left to right, include a Soldiers Club (sign partly obscured) which was probably down a lane; A. Eady & Co., a piano warehouse; The Oceanic Fresh Fish Co.; Thames Fisheries Ltd.; the Theatre Royal, where the 1919 film The Brand is showing; Jenkin & McIntyre, cycle engineers; H. Fort, a tailor; and on the corner of Victoria Street and the then Marlboro Place is the Hamilton Hotel. On the far corner was the New Zealand Government State Fire Insurance Office building which included a number of businesses. Also visible in this image are men working on the road, possibly repairing pot holes.
