Description
This rifle shooting team was gathered together in Wellington in1908 to represent New Zealand for the Lord Roberts Trophy which was presented for competition between the various colonies of the British Empire (secondary Schools). The shoot took place at Polhill Gully, Wellington and was in charge of retired officers of the South African War. Colonel Robin, well known officer of the war and senior officer in New Zealand forces, was in command and after the shoot (which did not win the trophy but was highly placed after Natal and South Africa) stated that this was the first rifle shooting team either senior or junior ever gathered together to represent New Zealand. The top scorer B. C. O'Conner, Rangiora, later transferred to the King Country and then to the Waikato. Sgt Cowan, Rangiora was acknowledged the best shoot in practice but the conditions of the day were not favourable. Back Row: Major Huges, DSO, Pte P. C. Brent (Dunedin), Pvt. B. C. O'Connor (Rangiora), Pvt. J. A. Williamson (Wellington), Pvt. W. Bennett (Wellington), Seigh L (Dunedin), Pvt. R. McIntyre (Auckland), St. Cowan (Rangiora).
