Description
Decorated presentation by the mayor to each of the councillors on his retirement in December 1878. At that time mayoral elections were held annually and Vialou, the borough's first mayor from february 1878, did not contest the next election. Councillors are (clockwise from bottom left): D. Gardiner, A. Potter, Jas Hume, R. Gwynne, B.C. Beale, F. Gaudin, N.R.Cox, I. Coates, T. Dawson. The building at the bottom, the Municipal Chambers, was in Victoria Street next to where the Bank of New Zealand now stands (2022).
