Object Detail

Description
William Bramwell Pomeroy was born in 1890 in Victoria, Australia, and employed as an accountant with the family firm J Pomeroy & Co., in Hamilton. If this identification is correct, the other people in the photograph would be his wife Joyce Winifred Pomeroy and child Joyce Leslie, born in July 1917. The photograph shows him with the rank of Corporal, but the Cenotaph database lists his first known rank as Quartermaster Sergeant. Sergeant Pomeroy embarked on 13 October 1917, from Wellington, aboard the Arawa, destination Liverpool. His unit was E Company, 30th Reinforcements. He was discharged in 1918 as unfit for war service on account of illness contracted while on active service - he had been buried twice by shell bursts and as a result suffered from what was then known as neurasthenia. He returned to New Zealand on the Ayrshire in November 1918. William Pomeroy died in January 1970 and is buried in the Hamilton East Cemetery.
