Description
Taken from northeast, this photo shows William Dey's general store and the store of tailor and draper Watson Petty. Dey's was located on the northwest corner of Grey Street and Cook Street. Petty's was two doors along on Grey Street. The Royal Hotel, on the southwest corner, is partly visible. In front of Petty's is a bullock-drawn cart. A Maori man and two Maori women are seated on the cart. A young boy is standing on the street side of the cart and a woman is just visible on the footpath behind the bullocks. William Dey was an agent for the New Zealand Insurance Company and the Waikato Times and the store was also a Post Office. William Dey was mayor of Hamilton Borough from 1893-1899 and 1903-1905.
