The photo was taken in 1966 or later as the New BNZ building was completed in late 66 or early 67 as we moved into the BNZ building prior to decimal currency day in July 1967. The old Branch at Hood st and Victoria st was too small for the decimal changeover and BNZ Hamilton was the main BULK decimal currency storage Bank

The photo would have been taken in late 1964 or early 1965. By then the trackage had been lifted from the former, now redundant trackbed in front of the station. As a footnote, the toilet block, shown at the left end (eastern) of the railway station was fitted with "Lockebies patent" brass toilet locks. You had to "spend a penny" to use them. a small white enamel sign on the outside of the door above the penny lock said "Put a Penny in the slot and slide the bolt" while another on the inside said "Lock the door" I remember using these toilets this way as a young boy. (My father was a Guard on the railways) so It was a convenient toilet to use when shopping in the centre of town (Pollock & Milne, etc)

The two arched buildings in the right background are the William Paul Hall & the Bledisloe Hall (They were used to house the Waikato Winter Show. The railway station was closed on about 19th September 1964 when the new underground railway station and lower concrete railway bridge were opened. I travelled by steam-hauled (Bb locomotive) passenger train from Hamilton Station to Claudlands over the old railway line across Victoria Street on 19 September 1964, over now what is the central road traffic bridge the returned by Drewery "Twinset" railcar from Claudlands over the new bridge through to the new underground Hamilton railway station. (I still have the ticket) The old railway station was then relocated to the Waikato University campus.
