Description
This photograph shows three workers from the Hamilton City Council's Works Department removing a transformer from an outdoor substation on the northeast corner of Clyde Street and Grey Street. Two of the workers are smoking cigarettes. Two young boys are watching. In the background, just above the truck's roof, part of the south facing wall of the Church of the Holy Rosary is visible. This church was demolished in 1975. To the right of the church is the Catholic Presbytery. The red brick wall that surrounds this corner site was an extension of the St Mary's Convent wall further along Clyde Street and was probably built in the late-1950s or early-1960s. The wall was demolished in 2009. The high wire fence just behind the brick wall enclosed playing fields used by St Mary's Primary School and Sacred Heart College. The Works' truck is a Morris.
