Alfred Kidd stands in front of Premier (Prime Minister) R J Seddon (under umbrella), addresses Boer War troops in Auckland. Officer in front of troops in peaked cap and light uniform is a Colonel (presumably commanding the unit). Major General James Melville Babington, G.O.C. New Zealand Defence Forces is to his right in dark uniform.
