In Chapter 3 of 'Life at the Oaks memories of Raglan & Hamilton 1890-1912', Elsie Fitz-William wrote that in 1975 it was 83 years after, "On the hill above Raglan township Father [James Rendell] built a spacious ten-roomed house for his large and increasing family. It was built of kauri and it seems almost incredible that it cost only £200".
