This bridge was originally built piers consisting of two columns. However the bridge was too unsteady and used to sway with a train in windy situations. Guy ropes were tried but were not successful. Around the time the NIMT was opened, larger locomotives were used and this bridge stopped them being used on the Rotorua trains. Around 1908, the bridge had an extra pier added plus new trusses and the deck was moved over to the center of the widened structure. This photo was taken during that job, note the new widened concrete abutment, the top of the new pier and the sections of the new truss on the walkway.
