Object Detail

Description
Gathering in Garden Place for Lt. General Sir Bernard Freyberg's visit following the Tunisian Campaign. Freyberg travelled the whole of the country over two weeks. Hamilton was his last official stop in New Zealand. Garden Place was by now a carpark and along with Victoria Street, from Collingwood to Ward Street, was closed to traffic that morning. The ranks of men in front of the dais are RSA members forming a guard of honour. On the dais are the Mayor H D Caro, the Prime Minister Rt Hon Peter Fraser and local dignitaries. Freyberg's visit was extensively reported (arrangements and event) in the Waikato Times during the previous week. The Patriotic Hut is in the background.
