Description
Laying the foundation stone of the new post office building (now Sky City Casino). The Postmaster General and MP for Dunedin South, Hon. Fred Jones accepts the mallet (gavel) from the contractor Mr W B Young. The Chief Post Office was opened in December 1940. It is 'modernistic style' built of Hinuera stone. It was built by Hamilton's W.B.Young. It boasts a unique glazed dome containing 1660 lenses. The postal counter became known in 1987 as 'Central' causing confusion between 'Chief Post Office' & 'Central counter'. The building now (2013) houses entertainment, bars and a casino. Architects - White & Lee; Steel engineer - J R Baird; Builder W B Young; Cost - £70,000-0-0 (2013 equivalent: $6,154,766.36).
