Description
The Theatre Royal is on the right. On the left is The Regal Dining Rooms which later moved a few doors up Victoria Street. Wedged between the Dining Rooms and the cinema is the Thames Fish Shop (also known as Thames Fisheries Ltd.). Two service cars (luxury omnibuses) The leading car appears to be an older Cadillac. The car on the left is likely a Chevrolet. Theatre Royal became the Embassy Theatre with considerably modernised facade. The Regal Dining Rooms building was built by T W Maunder, owner of Alexandra Buildings, in 1904. It still stands (2021).
After this photo was featured in Waikato Times column 'Camera Obscura' column in 27 May 2012 edition, Mr Bob Gerrish advised by undated letter: the Thames fish shop belonged to my grandfather and grandmother, Edward (Ted) and Mary Gerrish. There was only wet (fresh) fish sold in the shop, no cooked fish and chips. the reason for "Thames" in the name came about because Ted Gerrish was formerly a fisherman from Thames in the days when boats went out under sail only and the fish were kept fresh with large blocks of ice
