Arthur Rees was born about 1882, and when he enlisted was living at the Highcroft Private Hotel, in Collingwood Street. His father was the Reverend D A Rees, of Bangalore City, Mysore, India. His rank on enlistment was Quartermaster Sergeant, and in the photograph he wears the quartermaster's arm patch above his sergeant's stripes. He embarked for Suez on 14 August 1914, aboard either the Willochra or the Tofua. After the war Arthur Rees returned to New Zealand and married Kate Winifred Wells in 1921. He died in 1946, aged 64, and is buried in Purewa Cemetery.
