Description
This photograph shows Captain McDonald, his wife Phoebe, and children Athol born 1908; Ian, born 1910; Avis, born 1912; and Colin, born 1914. Captain McDonald was born at Bindelo, New South Wales, and was employed as an accountant at the Waikato Co-operative Bacon Co. in Frankton. He served with the 1st (Auckland) Mounted Rifles, and the 16th (Waikato) Regiment, which upon the outbreak of war became the 16th (Waikato) Company, Auckland Infantry Battalion. Captain McDonald embarked on the Star of India or the Waimana on 16 October 1914, destination Suez, and served at Gallipoli where he was wounded along with all the officers of his company. He arrived back in Auckland on 24 June 1915. On 6 May 1916 Captain McDonald embarked once again for Suez on the Navua, this time as Headquarters Staff, Officer commanding Troops. He survived the war and returned to Hamilton, where he died in 1963, aged 84. He is buried in the Hamilton East Cemetery.
