Object Detail

Description
William Grant McKinnon, born 1895, was the third eldest of four brothers who served in the Great War, and the only one to survive. They were the sons of Donald and Margaret McKinnon, of Kaipaki. In civilian life he was a farmer, and enlisted as a Trooper in the NZ Mounted Rifles. He embarked with the 9th Reinforcements of the NZMR on 8 January 1916, aboard the Maunganui, bound for Suez. He was wounded on May 22nd 1916. After the war, William married Susan Winifred in 1922. William died in 1977, aged 81, and Winifred died in 1988, aged 88. They are both buried in the Tirau Street Cemetery in Putaruru. It is likely that this portrait is of William McKinnon because the young man shown wears the shoulder title and collar badges of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles (NZMR), 9th Reinforcements.
