Description
This photograph shows Alfred, on the left, and Augustine Bond, sons of James Shiner Bond and his wife Sarah. James Bond was mayor of Hamilton from 1905 to 1909. They are shown wearing the badges of the 16th Waikato Regiment, which was part of the Auckland Infantry Battalion. Alfred, born in 1885, left for Suez with the main body on 16 October 1914. He was a member of the Headquarters staff of the Auckland Infantry Battalion, with the rank of sergeant. After the war, Alfred married Adah Ring in 1919. He died in April 1928, at the age of 43, and is buried in the Hamilton East Cemetery. Augustine, born 1890, embarked at the same time, and in the same ship, as his brother. He was a Private with the Auckland Infantry Battalion, and served at Gallipoli, where he was killed in action on 25 April 1915, aged 25. He is buried in the Baby 700 cemetery at Anzac Cove.
